It's 5 AM. Coffee's in hand. House is quiet.
Every kid starts out the same way.
Why?
You answer. They ask again.
But why?
You answer that too, if you can. Eventually you hit the edge of what you know, or the edge of your patience, or both at the same time, and something in the exchange shifts. Not because the kid ran out of questions. Because the adult ran out of answers.
Somewhere in there, most of us learn a lesson nobody meant to teach us. Stop asking. The adults are already stretched thin.
School reinforces it. There is a curriculum to get through, a class of thirty, a bell that rings in forty minutes whether or not your question got answered. Books reinforce it too, since a book can only answer the questions its author thought to include. For most of human history, curiosity has run straight into a wall made of scarcity. Not enough time. Not enough experts. Not enough patience to keep going.
I think that wall just came down, and most people have not noticed yet.
The Shift Underneath Everything
For most of human history, success depended on possessing information. Memorize it. Follow the instructions. Learn the established process. Pass the test. Become a specialist in a narrow lane, because specializing was the only way to actually hold enough knowledge to be useful.
That world made sense when knowledge itself was the scarce resource.
It is not scarce anymore.
Information is close to free now. A question that used to require a library, an expert, or years of study can get a serious first answer in seconds, at any hour, without anyone running out of patience.
When the scarce resource disappears, the thing that used to be valuable because of that scarcity stops being the advantage. The competitive advantage shifts toward whatever AI cannot simply hand you.
Not information. Direction.
What Becomes Valuable Once Information Isn't the Bottleneck
Here is the real question underneath this whole new series, and I am going to keep circling it from a few different angles over the next several editions.
If a person could have a genius-level thinking partner available at every age, from childhood onward, what would actually be worth spending a life developing?
Not memorization. Not the ability to retrieve a fact faster than the kid next to you. Those are exactly the things AI already does better, cheaper, and faster than any human ever could.
What remains valuable is a shorter, stranger list than most people expect. The ability to ask a better question instead of just accepting the first answer. The judgment to know which answer actually matters. The imagination to picture something that does not exist yet. The willingness to actually build the thing instead of just describing it.
I am going to spend the next few editions going deep on that list, piece by piece. Not as an abstract idea. As something with real implications for how kids get raised, how schools get built, and how any of us decide what is worth getting good at for the next ten years.
The Other Half of This Question
Here is the part that makes this different from just another "future of work" newsletter.
If curiosity is the thing worth preserving, what would you actually have to build to preserve it?
Not a better test. Tests measure whether you can retrieve the right answer under pressure, which is precisely the skill that mattered most when information was scarce and matters least now that it is not.
You would have to build something that treats a kid's questions as the curriculum instead of an interruption to it. Something where a cognitive partner is available the moment the "why" shows up, instead of the kid learning to swallow it because the adult in the room already answered forty minutes of questions from other students.
I have a name for what that might actually look like, and I am going to spend a later edition in this series laying it out properly. For now, I just want you to sit with the question, because I think it matters more than the answer I eventually land on.
What happens to a kid who never has to learn that stopping was the polite thing to do?
Why This Matters Here Specifically
You know why I care about this personally.
Traditional education has always rewarded a fairly narrow set of things. Memorization. Sequential processing. Standardized answers, delivered in a standardized order, on a standardized timeline.
A lot of dyslexic and neurodivergent minds were never built for that particular race, not because the thinking was weak, but because the race was measuring the wrong thing the entire time. Pattern recognition. Big-picture thinking. Connecting ideas that do not obviously belong together. Asking the question nobody else in the room thought to ask.
If the thing that is about to become valuable is exactly that list, and not the ability to retrieve a memorized fact under time pressure, then this shift is not neutral for our community. It might be one of the first times in a very long time that the world starts rewarding the actual shape of a lot of the minds reading this newsletter, instead of quietly penalizing it.
OK But What Do I Actually Do With This?
One practice to start this week, and to keep for as long as it's useful.
The next time a "why" shows up in your own head, an itch of curiosity about something you don't fully understand, do not let it die from lack of time. Take it straight to your AI. Not to get a five-second answer and move on. Ask a follow-up. Then another one. Push it the way a kid would, before anyone taught them to stop.
Notice how far you can actually get in fifteen minutes when nobody runs out of patience.

Use this the next time a "why" shows up and you're tempted to let it go.
"I have a question I'm curious about, but I don't fully know why it interests me yet. Help me actually explore it instead of just answering it quickly. Ask me a follow-up question after each answer, the way a curious kid would, so we can keep going deeper instead of stopping at the first surface-level explanation."
Follow the "why" as far as it wants to go. See where it was actually headed.

🧠 For dyslexic and neurodivergent thinkers specifically, this shift is not neutral. The traits that traditional education has quietly penalized for generations, pattern recognition, big-picture thinking, asking the question nobody else thought to ask, may be exactly what starts getting rewarded.
